Digital learning
During the industrial revolution advances in the printing press and in paper manufacturing led to a massive expansion of newspaper and book publishing. Very quickly the ability to read changed from being only for privileged elite, to an essential skill for the common worker. Gradually free public education became the cornerstone of successful societies. In communities where the populace could read, write and do arithmetic infrastructure increased and society advanced.
I believe that we are now in a similar turning point in history. The Information and Telecommunications Revolution is creating a world in which new skills are essential. For example, in recent years the ability to create videos has switched from being a Hollywood monopoly to a skill that individuals now use to inform and affect change. Just as the “3 Rs” were the foundation to building the successful society we’ve known, technological skills will be the foundation for success in the future. Below are two comprehensive websites that highlight a wide variety of technology resources to use in the classroom.

Sequoyah Students Use
Few schools have the resources to make embracing technology easy, and my own school, Sequoyah Middle School in Federal Way, WA, is no exception. But when was teaching ever easy? Technology is increasingly part of our daily lives, and it is increasingly part of our practice as educators. Even with limited resources my colleagues are providing our students with opportunities to use technology to deepen their learning and are using technology to improve their own practices.

Help Students Gain a Global Perspective
Through the use of technology, teachers can help their students conduct meaningful research and even connect with students across the globe and conduct meaningful research. With these programs students develop technological savvy and global perspectives.
World Savvy
If you click on “What We Do,” then “World Savvy Classrooms,” then scroll down and click on “Resources,” you will see several links. If you click on “World Savvy Classrooms Toolkit” you will see a number of resources. I like the WSC Launch Workshop lesson plan because it sets students up to be able to engage in meaningful discussions. I like the WSC Launch Workshop Reflection sheet because it sets students up to explore topics of global importance. I also like the World Savvy Classrooms Rubric because it’s comprehensive but could be easily adapted to measure any “Take Action” project. If you click on either the Population and Progress Collaborators Guide link or the Population and Progress Monitor link you get the same online flip book. It’s full of good information.

At the top of the page click on “Resources,” within the text click on the “curriculum units” link, on the left side-bar click on “Teacher-Created Curriculum.” The lesson plans are clear and well put together. Lessons available on this site that might be more Globally Competent include:
"Cambodia: Past and Present,”
“Genocide, Social Conflicts and the Upstander,”
“How does my Cambodian Culture Effect Who I am as a Student in the United States,”
“The Chinese Family in the Twentieth Century,”
“Curriculum Units on African American History,” and
“Tea Party for the 19th Century American Activists.”

Culture Grams from ProQuest
This site is an exceptional tool for middle school students to use to develop research skills. Culture Grams provides a variety of geographical information about each country including standard of living, political participation and birthrates. It helps students learn researching skills and at the same time gain a global understanding.
